Here's what's in the new XBOX KODU Patch

(stolen from http://community.research.microsoft.com/blogs/kodu/default.aspx)

The Xbox update just passed peer review. W00T! The most important fix is that the KoduZone servers are now visible again.

With this change, the Xbox version has now caught up with the PC version in terms of features.

For the past several months we’ve been primarily focused on the PC version of Kodu so a lot of the keyboard and mouse support we’ve been adding doesn’t really apply to the Xbox version. But we’ve also fixed a bunch of bugs and added new features that apply to both.

· We renamed the “Mini Hub” to “Home Menu” since this makes a bit more sense and should be easier to remember. You still get to it from in game by pressing the Start button.

· GamePad direction filters —You can now look for specific directions on the gamepad sticks. For instance, When Left Stick Up : Do Create Apple

· Turning and movement can now be controlled separately. For instance I can program a Kodu with:

When Always : Do turn North

When Gamepad LeftStick : Move

This will allow Kodu to move around but always face the same direction.

· New option to hide the resource meter (thermometer) during gameplay. This is on a per-level basis and can be found in the World Options list.

· New support for nested rows in the programming UI. The nesting of the rows in indicated by indentation. Any indented rows are only run if the “When” side of their parent row is also true. For instance it used to be complicated to program a bot to shoot at another bot when the user pressed a button. The old solution required switching pages. Now you can program this as:

When Gamepad A :

When See Kodu : Do Shoot

This is just one example where this is useful. I’m sure you’ll find more.

Note that when you cut/paste a row with other rows nested beneath it, all the nested rows will be cut and pasted with their parent.

· Fixed help overlay information for paused mode. BTW To get into paused mode with the GamePad you have to press both triggers AND both stick-buttons at the same time.

· Allow going from paused mode straight to the HomeMenu. This is great for creating nice thumbnails since you can pause the game, move the camera to where it looks best and then go straight into the HomeMenu to save the game.

· New Hint system. What this does is when we recognize a point where we can help we bring up a “toast” notification in the lower right hand corner of the screen. When toast pops up you can press on the gamepad to bring up the modal version of the dialog with more information. Note that the option only applies to hints during edit time. When you’re playing the level the button may be mapped to game controls so we don’t steal it away. We’ve created a handful of hints that work with the new system but we’re always looking for more ideas. Can you think of anything that should be covered by this?

· Added HelpOverlay information for tag editing on LoadLevel and SaveLevel menus.

· Tuned the physics behavior of the apple, rock and soccer ball to be less infinitely bouncy. This should not affect already created levels.

· Bug fixes. Lots and lots. Of course the most important is that you should now be able to see the KoduZone servers when sharing.

XBOX 360 Kodu - Patch is HERE!

Remember back in October, 2009? That's when we blogged that patch 2 was live, but there were issues with the shared servers.

Remember that? That was a long time ago.

It has seriously taken that long for this next patch to make its rounds and get approved for distribution.

But here it is. It's here.

For reals.

For reals, for reals.

Here's what you do now.

1. Fire up your 360.
2. Stare at the prompt that tells you there's an update.
3. Hit X to start the download.
4. Download the 148.32 megs to your 360's hard drive.
5. Pinch yourself. It's real. For reals.

Hopefully all is in order - admittedly, I haven't actually played with the patch yet. I'm posting this as the patch is downloading. But, c'mon, it's gotta all work ... right?

Tavish Hill Interview

Hey guys - Richard Olsen (of Planet Kodu) recently conducted a really cool interview with master Kodu designer Tavish Hill. As always, plenty to learn every time the guy starts talking about what's possible in Kodu.

Check out Tavish talking about the worlds he creates in Kodu here.

New PC Kodu Build Available (Version 1.0.34.0)

Okay, maybe not new new (it's been out since 3/9/2010) but it's new-ish, sorta.

If you have a PC, download it here:

Here are the changes:

· Automatic updates: When installing the new version you have the option to opt-in to have Kodu check for updates each time it starts up.

· Usage information: When installing the new version you have the option to opt-in to having Kodu send anonymous usage information to help us make Kodu better.

· New privacy statement.

· Add support for Cyrillic characters.

· Added mouse control buttons to help screens.

· Allow the ‘Home’ key to take you directly from the MainMenu to the HomeMenu. Note that this only works if you already have a level loaded, ie you’ve either loaded a level or resumed since starting.

· Allow going from paused mode straight to the HomeMenu. This is great for creating nice thumbnails since you can pause the game, move the camera to where it looks best and then go straight into the HomeMenu to save the game.

· New Hint system. When toast pops up you can either press on the gamepad, or F1 on the keyboard or left click with the mouse to bring up the modal version of the dialog. Created a handful of hints that work with the new system. Always looking for more ideas.

· Fixed bugs with ToolTips being rendered underneath AddItem menu and over text editor.

· Fixed bug where dragging a character with the mouse across the bottom of the screen would drop the character and activate the ToolBar.

· Added HelpOverlay information for tag editing on LoadLevel and SaveLevel menus.

· Fixed help overlay information for paused mode. BTW To get into paused mode, on the keyboard just hit the ‘pause’ key. With the GamePad you have to press both triggers AND boh stick-buttons at the same time. J

· Fixed end of game display so you can just click on the buttons on the screen as well as pressing them on the keyboard.

· Fixed bug caused by transitioning between gamepad and keyboard/mouse modes while the AddItem menu is active.

· Fixed a bug in the radio button UI element which was causing its value to be ignored.

· Fixed a bug in the text editor’s handling of key caps.

· Tuned the physics behavior of the apple, rock and soccer ball to be less infinitely bouncy. This should not affect already created levels.

· Fixed a bug with how the SaveLevelMenu handles mouse input.

· Modified more built-in levels to be keyboard/mouse friendly.

As heard on TWITTER

one, maybe two major #kodugame lab announcements in January, starting the week of the 11th. Look for an announcement from the BETT show.

Any thoughts as to what Matt is talking about? Talk amongst yourselves.

Kodu Patch 2.3 in Peer Review

Hey guys - just to let you know Kodu Patch 2.3 is in peer review. Hopefully this one will check out and we'll get our servers back!

Keep an eye on the boards for updates -- I'll check on the progress periodically and report back if there are any issues.

Okay, don't panic ... But the Sharing Zones are a little messed up right now.

You got the new patch, you're excited to try out the new sharing speeds and whatnot ... and you discover that if you can actually remain in a KoduZone without it booting you, you can't actually see any of the levels.

The devs know about this and they're chasing it down. Until then, just load up some of your old levels and start seeing what the new tweaks have done to your game. Chances are, you're gonna have some clean-up work to do.

UPDATE: Looks like this is a problem that will have to be fixed in a subsequent update. They'll be re-entering the patch into peer review next week. Sharing levels between friends still works just fine. So cozy up with some fellow KoduXers and keep that creativity flowin'.

Patch 2 is LIVE!

Aight! It's here! Now get to scaling!

Check the boards if you have any questions about downloading and installing the latest patch.

Anyone have XNA Creators Club?

If you're a premium member, head on over to the creators site and review Patch 2 - it's in peer review and could use your consideration.

Nested Expressions for Kodu coming up!

So, it's been tweeted that Kodu will (in the future) have nested expressions like:

Quote:
breakthrough feature for kodu logic: nested expressions, a la: (see - apple : do - move - towards and (score - below - 10 : say 'hungry'))

or

Quote:
kodu nested logic example 2: (controller - A button : and (score > 10 : shoot)

Now, it hasn't been announced whether or not this is making it into Patch 3 in November, or in a future release. That's what I love about Kodu - devs always thinking about the next thing, and we can always be inspired by a new tool to play around with.

Public PC Kodu soon!

New GAMES Section coming to the boards soon...

Something Cybercub is cooking up for those of us who check in frequently during work. Some simple arcade games and leaderboards and whatnot. Should be fun.

UPDATE - the ARCADE section is up. You should see a little ARCADE tab near the top right corner of the boards. Just a word of advice - don't even try to beat my score on Bejeweled Blitz. Seriously. I'm the like the greatest. In the world. I got a coffee mug that says so right here.

TAKE 'EM OUT - Now on the KoduZones

If you dare enter the KoduZones, be sure to check out TAKE 'EM OUT, my new sniper shooter game. I'm definitely gonna be patching it once patch 2 comes out (adding features like night vision and heat vision and whatnot) but until then, enjoy!

Here's some gameplay footage - sorry it's so dark. You really have to snag this one and try it out for yourself because youtube's compression ain't exactly a friend o' mine.

Here's something that Matt tweeted recently in response to the major features in Patch 3.

mmaclaurin wrote:

Okay, boards are up ...

... but I'm sure you knew that by now.  Thanks for your patience everyone!

Info about the next patch

So, yeah, the boards are still borked.  But soon, after this is cleared up and the server gets moved, they'll be back up and more awesome than ever.

That being said, more info about the next patch has been posted here:

I like this little comment:

"Good news: 7 days is up today, and the patch is re-entering peer review.

Better news: you should see patch 3 :) We're calling it the "kodux" patch. (not really, but I just did, so I guess we are :))"
